shot variation

Shot variation is a filming technique which is used to make a sequence of images using movement. These type of shots include a wide shot, long shots, medium shots and close ups. I will start by talking about wide shots. Wide shots are most commonly used to start a sequence of to set the tone. They also let the audience grab the concept of the scene. Long shots are used in films to force the attention of the viewer onto a certain character, mostly used for the main characters. Medium shots are most commonly used in action scenes as it allows the viewer to follow the action. Finally, close ups is when the camera is concentrated on a certain item or character; mostly used to show expression or emotion on a characters face.

multiple points of view

Multiple points of view relate to the character onscreen and the type of shot used to show this person in film.

  • POV (Point of View) is when the camera is placed in place of a character, making you see the story from their point of view and how they would see the situation.
  • OSS (Over the shoulder shot) is when the camera is behind one persons shoulder as they are talking to another. The back of the head or shoulders is usually captured when using these shots to show both characters communicating.

following the action

Following the action is a technique used in films, this is when there is some sort of action or movement in a scene and the camera follows the action as it is taking place. Below is a scene from Wanted which uses the Following the action technique to follow the bullet to show the distance of the shot that has been taken.

in-camera editing

When videographers shoot videos, they take into consideration that they will have the later on edit the pictures. However some deadlines may make it difficult for the videographer to do post-production editing. Often in cases like this, the videographers "edit in the camera". This would mean that the planning needs to be done in advance to find what shots could tell the correct story and then sorting the shots in that order. This may not result in a perfect product although the finished video will be much more interesting to watch than a shot which does not have a plan.
